The major application for Spray Polyurethane Foam commonly known as SPF in the construction industry is as a commercial roofing and perimeter wall insulation.   The use of SPF for wall insulation and  foundation waterproofing and insulation in residential homes is growing quickly.  This growth is due to the many advantages over traditional fiberglass and cellulose insulation systems.

Wall Insulation

Traditional fiberglass insulation is only stapled, or placed into the wall cavities and does not seal the stud and wall cavities from end to end, or top to bottom. Air infiltration can pass through these gaps, making it far less efficient than SPF. SPF not only adheres to, but forms to the walls and floors to create a tight seal and insulating barrier that stops this air leakage.  SPF produces R-values ranging to 6.5 to 7.0 per inch.  This is significantly higher than fiberglass at 3.5 per inch.  SPF is so efficient and lightweight as an insulating material; NASA even uses it to insulate the main rocket booster on the Space Shuttle.

Commercial Roofing

SPF roofing application can be applied as a recover over most existing roof systems.  SPF adheres to the substrate and expands in place.  It is a seamless (no seams, channels, flashings or overlapping edges for water to seep through) closed-cell mass (makes it one the best insulating materials) of SPF that stops roof leaks and insulates.  The thickness of the foam can be varied to improve drainage patterns.  A protective layer of gravel or an elastomeric coating is applied to the top surface of the foam for more protection from the weather.  This roof system evenly disperses precipitation and ice in the winter and enhances evaporation in the summer.
